​​​Indigenous Youth Program (IYP)

YMCAs alternative education pilot program targeted at assisting students at risk of disengaging from education. Working in partnership with NT Department of Education, the program focuses on enhancing numeracy and literacy competencies through a student centred program in a safe respectful environment with a particular focus on social emotional learning and pathways. Distinct from a mainstream classroom, the program is staffed by a classroom teacher and multiple youth workers, and offers a smaller number of student places to maximise support and engagement for students.  This program is supported by Australian Government, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. Y​​​outh Diversion

Katherine Youth Diversion program offers young people involved, or at risk of becoming involved, with the youth justice system;

  • pre-court diversion
  • youth diversionary activities; and
  • Support to reengage with community, family or education/training. 

Pre-court diversion aims to divert young people away from formal justice systems and court. Diversionary activities are offered that aim to engage young people with positive activities and experiences that promote social and emotional wellbeing and provide opportunity to develop the skills and abilities to make positive choices in their lives.

Boys & Girls Groupsare supported through Youth Diversion, Y Groups provide alternative activities for young people once a week, 3pm -7pm, during school term.

Y-Groups provide a safe, fun space to meet with friends and peers to try new activities, develop new skills and learn about topics relevant to young people. Guest speakers and groups are encouraged to come and get involved.

Y-Girls is held every Tuesday during school term. Transport is available.

Y-Boys is held every Monday during school term. Transport is available.

Funded through Territory Families, Office of Youth Affairs, the Community Youth Development program delivers constructive and engaging youth activities, events and programs designed to create positive change for young people in Katherine.
